Meerkat vs Periscope: Battle of Twitter’s Live-Streaming Apps

Welcome to InflexTech! The first in our many part technology review series. In this installment we tackle one of the biggest rivalries in the social media world today: Meerkat vs. Periscope.

Did you miss the big splash both made earlier this year? No worries! We’re here to tell you about the two, what’s the same, what’s different and who we see coming out on top of the live-streaming contest.

First to the plate was Meerkat. Released in February 2015, this third-party app was the breakout star of 2015 SXSW. Funded by celebrities and other influencers, the app gained a colossal following within a month of its launch.

Live-streaming experiences on social media seemed like an inevitable evolution, and many said Meerkat was the app Twitter should have been building. So of course, like clockwork, the day after SXSW ended Twitter released Periscope, their answer to live-streaming.

Periscope, functioning like Meerkat in more ways than not, had been acquired by Twitter in early 2015. The same day Periscope was released, Twitter pulled Meerkat’s access to its social graph, limiting the app’s ability to build a community with users’ current connections. This was the first of many clashes between the two apps.

Since their releases, both have been vying to be the undefeated champion of the live-streaming battle. So did we crown King of the Live-Stream? Watch above to find out.
